Easy Ways to Decorate Your Home on a Budget

You’re looking at your space now and feel it’s time for a makeover. But do you really need to splurge to decorate your home stylishly? Well, that depends on you. What we do know is with a little creativity, you can create a beautiful home that reflects your personal style, all while staying within your budget.

So, dive in and learn a few easy ways to decorate your home on a budget.

Update Sofa With a Slipcover

When redecorating our homes, we sometimes get the urge to replace the sofa. It looks worn out and has a color that’s simply hard to match. So, it has to go. Well, not necessarily.

If the piece is still good, you don’t have to replace it. Just change the fabric. But reupholstering a sofa can be costly. So, go for slipcovers that you can easily remove and wash instead.

Hang Prints

Hanging prints is an affordable way to achieve the look of a gallery wall without breaking the bank. Instead of heading to retail stores for a quick buy, browse for unique images from free stock websites. Print and frame them, then you’re good to go.

Or, go to thrift stores. You can score some old posters, vintage calendars with art, music sheets, large old books with beautiful covers, and so on.

Turn Plates Into Wall Art

You don’t have to hang prints and art on a gallery wall. Old plates you might already have can just as easily decorate a wall. They actually soften up a room as it provides a contrasting shape to all the sharp and angular edges.

You can use plate hangers to display the dishes. But if hammering in nails isn’t an option in your space, you can stylishly add them to shelves, among other decor.

Display Books Like Art

Another alternative to paintings and prints is books. On floating shelves, for example, you can display the books showing covers instead of the spines.

Use large books, even old magazines, to make the whole thing more stylish. Pick out the covers based on color for a cohesive and thematic effect. Old, hardbound coffee table books are perfect for this. You can buy a couple from thrift shops if you don’t already have them.

Mix Books and Art

Make the most out of your shelves by mixing books and art stylishly. Use what you already have or scour the local secondhand shops for budget-friendly items.

The key here is arranging your things creatively so the space doesn’t look like you’re simply storing things there. For example, arrange your books by color, then place a striking vignette between each color group.

Another way is to arrange books backward, so you have this display of varying neutral shades: white, beige, and brown. You can pretty much add any decor you want, like trailing vines and small items with contrasting colors.

Refresh Old Photos with Sleek Frames

A super easy decor idea: replace old picture frames with more modern ones. Sleek frames with a cohesive look present a collection of old photos in a very pleasing way. It’s also a bit easier to style than a display of eclectic frames.

Consistency in frame choice can help tie the photos together whether using the same frames or similar styles.

Display Decor in Threes

Arranging decor in threes adheres to the design principle known as the “rule of threes.” It’s a natural guideline, pretty much like the golden ratio, that’s commonly used in interior design, photography, and other visual arts.

The concept behind this rule is that an odd number of elements, particularly three, is visually more appealing, balanced, and memorable compared to an even number of elements.

So, when you’re decorating on a budget, explore what you have before buying anything. Try to give life to your old things by arranging them in ways you haven’t tried before, with the rule of threes as your guide.

Paint an Accent Wall

A fresh coat of paint is the easiest way to freshen up a room. But you don’t have to repaint the entire area, especially if the current coat is generally good. Instead, repaint a blank wall, making it stand out. This is your accent wall.

Which part of the room should you feature? This is typically the first wall you see when entering a room. Giving this particular side a pop of color enhances the focal nature of the wall.

When choosing the paint color for the accent wall, ditch the notion of sticking to a safe choice. Go as bold as you want. You can balance out any daring hue you choose with the right decor.

Go For DIY Wood Panels

The look of bright natural wood makes spaces more inviting. It’s also a trendy feature, especially with the rise of Scandinavian, Japandi, and rustic chic interior styles that favors the au natural with a neutral color palette.

Of course, not all homes come with hardwood flooring and wooden panels. But you can bring a natural look into your home, even with a limited budget. The easiest approach is to create a statement wall with a natural element. You can use wood strips to create a floor to ceiling paneling. Self-adhesive wood panels also work.

Paint the Pots

You can spice up your space by painting the pots if you have plenty of indoor plants. It’s a creative and budget-friendly way to customize things that align with your personal style.

If you have pots that look worn out or no longer match your aesthetic, a fresh coat of paint can transform them into eye-catching pieces. You don’t need advanced artistic skills. With simple brush strokes, you breathe new life into these pots.

Repurpose Old Jars and Wine Bottles

Repurposing old jars and wine bottles is an excellent way to add charm to your space. Instead of buying new decor, use what you already have to save money. You can turn them into vases for fresh flowers or dried ones, candle holders, storage containers, or a centerpiece for a table setting.

By repurposing items, we reduce waste and promote sustainability. Turning old jars and wine bottles into decorative pieces contributes to a greener approach to decorating.

DIY Jute Pots and Vase

Jute vases can add a natural and rustic touch to your decor. And you can make them yourself. It’s super easy.

Gather some jute rope or twine, old pots, glass jars, and ceramic vases to make this DIY project. You’ll also need hot glue and scissors. Simply wrap the jute string around the jars, covering either the entire thing or just halfway.

Raise the Curtain Rods

Hanging curtains 4 to 6 inches above the window frame is the common rule of thumb. But why not go higher? This small change can make a big impact, especially in small spaces. Curtains set high, like just a few inches below the ceiling, draw the eye upwards and create the illusion of height.

And if you really want to take it to the next level, go for ripple-fold curtains with a continuous vertical feature that accentuates that height even more. Your space will look and feel transformed in no time.

Extend the length of your existing curtains by adding fabric at the bottom. A white lacey fabric, for example, may work on plain white panels. If you don’t have a sewing machine, give fabric glue a shot. Using it is a bit tricky, so we recommend practicing first.

Use Sticker Tiles for the Backsplash

Give your kitchen a brand new look with a stunning backsplash...with sticker tiles. Using sticker tiles helps you achieve the desired look without the expense of new tiles or hiring professionals to install them. They usually come with adhesive backing, so you peel off the protective layer and attach the tiles directly onto the wall.

Refurbish Old Kitchen Cabinets

Another simple way to redecorate your kitchen is by giving the cabinets a makeover. A fresh coat of paint on basic cabinets instantly transforms how they look.

While you’re at it, change the cabinet door’s hardware with sleek, modern-style handles. Or, you can treat them like decor accents and go for something that stands out, as a knob or a drawer pull with a vintage look in brass or gold.

Put Plants in the Bathroom

Putting plants in the bathroom is a great way to enhance the overall ambiance of the space. They bring a touch of nature indoors, creating a fresher and more inviting feel. Plus, they add color, texture, and vibrance to an otherwise utilitarian area.
